"Triptych” A fine art exhibition with 3 California Artists in various styles.
Who:
Artists Dan McCaw, Derek Penix and Vanessa Rothe
Where:
Vanessa Rothe Fine Art Gallery 418 Ocean Ave Laguna Beach CA 92651
And ONLINE www.vanessarothefineart.com
When:
Opening July 1st to August 1st 2023
This summer the Vanessa Rothe Fine Art Gallery and Atelier is proud to present “TRIPTYCH” an fine art exhibition celebrating the exciting juxtaposition of three California artists who combine realism, impressionism and a hint of abstraction, when creating their works
of art.
"Each of us combines various genres and techniques in our paintings. Although they differ in style from one another, the works can be hung together side by side in a singular collection, as a “Triptych" as they share a cohesion. None are too realist, none too modern. Often times paint application and color harmony are the elements uniting them." notes artist/curator Vanessa Rothe
Contemporary Master Dan McCaw’s work embraces modern art with a focus on design, textures and feeling in his work. Although classically trained and after many years of success with realism and impressionism Dan purposefully decides to create work that’s focus is on creativity. His work is known more now for his expressionism. He credits Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard and Gustave Kilmt as well as the Abstract Expressionists as influences to his work and current freedom of not having to conform to the literal representation of the work. “My primary interest lies in going beyond the technique in order to interpret the subject in different ways and expand on the interpretation to make a personal statement. Creativity lies in uncertainty because your solution can be anything!” Remarks Dan. Ten works in various sizes from 30x24 in “Reverie" to 9x12 gems, all involve the figure in an environment.
Derek Penix, voted most award winning artist in America in 2022 by various art organizations, combines realism and impressionism but is currently starting to add some purposeful abstraction to his work. Blurring edges and suggesting realism in only a part of the painting, and the rest is color and emotion. His vivid color and loose brushwork makes his pieces some of the most sought after works in America. The realism he can capture in his subjects along with the general feeling of movement, makes his works exciting to the eye. The show will offer a large koi fish with lily pads in a 34x34” as well as his iconic New York and apple tree scenes along with 3 local Laguna Beach on location paintings, a new type of work for Derek.
Local artist, writer, curator, classically trained at Laguna College of Art and Design, Vanessa Rothe will have eight works in the exhibition. Rothe grew up in Laguna receiving awards for her work from 1st grade in Color it Orange, to a full Festival of Arts scholarship, and is now exhibiting in New York and amount many of the top artists in American in her genre. Her current work ranges in style from her iconic French landscapes with color and light and put her on the map as a California Impressionist, to decorative gold panels with white herons and art nouveau portraits, to her more recent designer graphic fashion figures with abstract backgrounds. Her latest works cross over from her traditional landscapes to a more modern set of works that have an almost illustrative feel to them and therefore have sold mostly in New York. Her abstract backgrounds mixed with haute couture fashion figures were inspired and influenced by growing up the daughter of a fashion designer to the stars and musicians, and reading Vogue since childhood. Rothe also is a contributing editor for American Art Collector and American Fine Art magazines, and has her own column, “ Art Industry Insider” in International Artist Magazine.
Opens at VRFA Gallery July 1st at 418 Ocean Ave Laguna Beach CA.

Late Summer/ Early FALL 2021 Exhibition - New dates: September 1st -30th, 2021
VRFA Gallery Presents: "Horse and Hound" Exhibition
"Horse and Hound" Exhibition
VRFA Gallery is proud to present our 2021 "Horse and Hound" collection as we gracefully transition from the hot summer daze into an elegant fall.
Where: 418 Ocean Avenue Laguna Beach, CA., & ONLINE
When: September 1st thru September 30th, 2021
We're off to the races with our second Equestrian exhibition here at VRFA Gallery. With the horse races opening once more in Del Mar and Santa Anita, we feel this theme is pertinent to society's cautious yet hopeful shift to social events and parle.
We are looking forward to celebrating this show as a commemoration of life and social gatherings. The tradition of the "horse and hound" dates back to the 16th century when European nobleman and monarchs would commission portraits of their fine steeds. These horses, in all their majestic beauty, added a layer of heroism, chivalry, and splendor the nobleman's persona. Thus, the genre of equestrian fine art was born. The popularity of thoroughbred racing coincided with the Impressionist art movement of the late 1800's, so many artists became fascinated with capturing the sport through brushstrokes. According to Equestrian Art, Evolution, & History, the "French impressionist Edgar Degas referenced photographs of the horse in motion, studying them for his later work. In many of his paintings, he aimed to capture the moments just before the race started" (steeplechaseofcharleston.com).
Other artists like Sir Alfred Munnings and George Stubbs dedicated their lives to the composition, anatomy, and movement of horses, inspiring an entire generation of equine storytelling and novel art. Many horse enthusiasts have attested to the transformative, healing, and spiritual prowess of the animal, so it's a beautiful yet challenging task for artists when attempting the capture the essence of the horse, rather than just the horse itself.

For the first time ever, VRFA presents a curated collection of modern works together with our traditional collection. Rich with color, emotion and texture and pair perfectly with our more classical art.
Did you know that representational artists often create abstract works? Yes, even realist artists that have studied the figure and traditional fine arts for over twenty years, like to explore their creativity and work in other genres. Many of the works included are created by our existing award winning renown realist artists, as well as a few fresh faces already working in the genre of Modern and Contemporary.
VRFA is proud to offer this exhibition as an outlet for this stream of creativity, exploring shape, values, line, color and often creating works that are from their expressions and emotions not only their refined skills. The works in this collection range from purely abstract works inspired by Diebenkorn and the mid-century bay area artists, flowing watercolors, and to stunning pieces that combine abstraction with the artists existing representational skills. In this selection of new and unique works presented, we you to open your mind to appreciate what our artists can create when focus is expression, color and emotion.
In the exhibition below you will find not only the works with their titles and pricing indicated to the right of each work, but also sample interiors with suggested groupings of the works shown together. In addition you will notice our MODERN collection goes very well shown alongside works from our TRADITIONAL collection. We feel strongly, that with thoughtful curation, the two genres may exist side by side in either modern or traditional collection. Keep in mind that most of these works can be recreated any size you need by our fine artists, easy commissions available thru the gallery. Please enjoy this unique fine art exhibition presented to you online at this time and anytime by appointment at the gallery in California. All works can be sold unframed, or framed.
We are at your disposal to discuss framing, decorating and pricing at (949) 280-1555. Thank you for supporting the arts and your fine artists.

Quote Rothe Curator: " This is such a fun and freeing theme for our artists to paint for. It was interesting to see the works being created and how the theme lead them to feel they could be a little looser. In Many works, Its about the movement of the clothing and therefore the brushwork could follow that movement and be looser in some places. Other areas could be rendered tightly as clothing fabric patterns are so fun to try and re create. In art school there is often an ENTIRE class on drapery and painting clothing on the figure… why not have an exhibition that then focuses on that I thought… ”
Quote Pavel SOKOV about the CONQUER painting “ This is my second self portrait I Did for VRFA Gallery recently. As for this work I took many artistic risks with this new piece for Vanessa’s fashion show. I focused on delivering a general sense of "energy and movement" and made rendering decisions around that….It changed my style a little for this work.” Says Pavel Sokov of Montreal

JUNE 2020 + ongoing "LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS" Master copies - why they are so important in an artists career, and often a precious work found in their studio.
Ongoing show
June 20th and now ongoing in our Master Copies subject section
"Learning from the Masters"
Featuring works by: Josh Clare, Michelle Dunaway,
Adrian Gottlieb, Bryan Mark Taylor, Karen Offutt,
Sam Robinson, and Vanessa Rothe.
Did you know? Learning from the Masters is an important step in an artists career, both early on in their studies and later as a master themselves to learn new techniques in painting.
Master copies play an important role in artists lives and are seldom seen from the artists studio. They help to show the skill of the artist and are an important insight to what inspired the artist in their own work. With this exhibition we bring a collection of works to celebrate the importance of master copies in our artist's lives.
Just as a businessman does an internship and lawyers study past cases, an artist learns by copying the masters. In art school figure painting 101 we work many many hours learning techniques such as grisaille, layering, edge work, and the final assignment is to copy a Master work of an older artist. They are done most often after a master who has passed, but sometimes even living masters are copied. The works are new painted works, and the artists are trying to emulate the master they admire and are copying.
This is an important tool for all artists and helps us learn and take our work to the next level. Both early in their career, or later as mid career or masters themselves, completing a master copy from an artist you admire, helps one to learn new skills or new additions to our set of painters tools.Perhaps they did the copy to learn how the master achieved the lighting. Perhaps they are done to learn how to warm up the skin tones in their own work. Perhaps the artist admired the figures or general paint application style. After a master copy is completed and the work studied up close, strokes copied, techniques analyised, that new artist may add one or two of the elements that they learned into their own work, first hand.
Often times when visiting an artists studio collectors recognize a painting on the wall that seems familiar to them, perhaps from visiting a museum or books they have seen. In many studios the artist keeps their master copy on display as it is perhaps a favorite work, and or keep it there to remember what they learned from it. Sculptors even do copies of some of the most famous statues or busts to learn how the master had solved problems in the completion. This has been done since the early days, the greek or roman statues were copied and even painters copy the statues to learn form, simplified beauty of line etc.
Again, master copies play an important role in artists lives and are seldom seen from the artists studio. They often help show the skill of the artist and are an important insight to what inspired the artist in their own work. With this exhibition we bring them to you in a collection and are celebrating to the importance of master copies in our lives. Seeing them may help you understand what inspires the artist you are buying and their work. As some collectors had seen some of our copies, they asked if they were for sale for their own collection. We have decdided to offer some for sale. Some of the works are offered for sale, as a master copy" an original oil painting by a contemporary artist but not an original idea. They are sold as a COPY but one that was chosen by the artist to do on their own for their general knowledge and admiration of the work. The gallery is noting that these works, although copies, are perhaps an artist painting an artist that you admire and would like to look at in your home or office and enjoy. We are bringing the exhibtion on line for you to enjoy and many are just for viewing here online, but with a small selection of works for purchase as well.
We encourage you to get to know your artist, learn what inspires them, and this is one of the ways we can offer to help you do so.
Thank you for supporting the arts and taking an interest in our artists lives and inspiration.

"LIKENESS" January February 2020
JANUARY 11th -FEB 28th, 2020
"LIKENESS"
A Fine Art Exhibition exploring portrait and figure painting today...
DIGITAL CATALOG -TO VIEW THE SHOW
Realism, Impressionism, Abstraction.. what do we use to describe a work that is a combination of the three? How much does a portrait or figurative work need to look like the model or subject these days? Is capturing a “Likeness” as important in today's fine art works as it once was? Is figure and portrait painting anything like it was back in the 1800 and early 1900s? or has the art world finally adopted a liberal view on the importance of "likeness" in a figure painting.
Today in the realist figurative world see a mixture of genres coming together in the same painting, or exhibiting side by side, and its not just in America. Russian artists, Icelandic artists, French artist and more have been influenced, be it by instagram shots of new works they can easily access now, or the rise in international art fairs and exhibitions that are traveling around the globe.
International Artists Include:
C.W Mundy, David Gray, Casey Childs, Vincent Xeus, David Shevlino, Nick Runge, Suchitra Bhosle (India), Olga Krimon,( Russia) Michelle Dunaway, Karen Offut, Vadim Suvorov,( Ukraine) Thor Grimur Einarson, (Iceland), Nicolas Martin ( France), Aaron Westerberg, Olga Grigoreyva (Russia), Terry Miura, Sergey Kovalenko (Ukraine), Eric Bowman, Danil Volkov (Russia) Ray Roberts, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Leon Okun (Russia), Craig Pursely, Julie Snyder, Sam Robinson. Hope Railey, Vanessa Rothe, Elizabeth McGhee, Matt Talbert and William Neukomm from Laguna College of Art and Design. Corneila Hernes ( Norway ) and Stephan Bauman from Florence academy. The exhibit and sale Includes two historical works from St. Petersberg by Eric Rebane, and Boris Grachev plus two current students works from the Repin Figurative Academy.
The academically trained teachers, artists, and professionals now feel they are "allowed" to really blur edges, or drip some pigment and pull the brush through the edges of their finely rendered paintings. Graphic layout and composition comes into play a lot more in the works we are seeing and having figures that are not "finished" is often more the norm. "This has of course happened before, that figures in art have been known to be loose and lightly suggested, not realistically painted, and artists without academic training were often creating them. However… recently, our academically trained realist painters are pushing the envelope and adding blurred edges, visible brushwork and bold abstraction in their works, for a few years now. As mentioned in my articles published in 2018, Post war modern and bay area figurative was already experimenting with this, even the Impressionists and the post impressionists before them… the difference is now its done by some of the tightest trained academic realists, the academy trained artists...and the result is simply outstanding. They have created a hybrid style combining design, and abstraction and crisps classical realism. The works still present and hold a trained realist sublime quality as well as a purely creative side with abstract backgrounds and blurred edges that aid to the over “feeling” of the work. ” - Suggests Rothe the curator
"In Russia and the Ukraine there are two types of art schools, ones that focus on Decorative arts, color, and design, and others that are more academic. Some teach kids to know color before all else, others more academically with casts, and values and the often don’t mix the two styles. its encouraging to see that both are being accepted here in America even in the same artwork. “
- notes Leoniya Okun, graduate from the Repin Academy of St. Petersburg.
In this exciting exhibition, we take it a step further as we study the abstracting of the human figure, to ask about the idea of ‘'Likeness'' and weather capturing a personality in a work of art is as important in todays works as it was in the past. Recall when portrait painting, before photos were all they had and likeness played a very important role, compared to todays more suggestive styles.
The exhibition combines works by many Artists from academic schools such as the Repin Academy of Art St. Petersburg, Laguna Collge of art and Design and the Florence Academy. It also presents works by California Plein Air Figure and Landscape Painters, as well as Ukrainian decorative arts students and painters from various backgrounds and training. Works coming in from Iceland, Russia, New York and California. The paintings will range from small gems and portrait studies to museum quality large scale figures in the landscape as well as historical drawings and paintings from our Russian Collection.
Vanessa Rothe Fine Art and the VRFA artists are proud to be on the forefront of these new genres of art and are proud to present to you "Likeness” Opening January 11th at the VRFA Gallery 418 Ocean ave here in Laguna Beach CA. Exhibition runs thru Feb 28th, 2020.

As seen in American Art Collector Magazine August & September 2019. The FALL exhibition which will be ideal for the East Coast at that time, with Fall leaves and season, will consist 22 artists painting on the theme of the Hunt, The Chase. Held in the Patrons Gallery with rich wood furniture fireplace and old world charm, the Hunt will be right at home in the famous historical Salmagundi Club walls. The theme of the hunt has been popular thru the ages and Fox Chase is still prevalent in England, France and Europe as well as the East Coast. From Louis 14th to French riding clubs, Tailor shops still exist in Paris on Rue Jacob crafting one of a kind Tweed suits for the hunting society in France and clubs and estates still practice this historical sport, most more conscientiously than in the past. From historical works such as Chardin’s renown tonal still life’s of ducks, rabbit, fowl and game to Peter Paul Rubens dynamic “The Tiger hunt” and “ The Wolf and Fox” , to Eugene Delacroix "Tiger Hunt", these fine works were often created on a grand scale. Prize Fox hounds and pheasant hunting being some of the mores prevalent of the subjects of the mid 1800 and 1900’s and it is sill an intriguing theme for artists to approach today."We have discovered that many of our fine art collectors admire this exciting timeless theme. I had been seeing historical works related to duck and pheasant hunting or fox chase, as well as the theme being touched on in some contemporary artists over the last 6 months so I decided to move forward and curate a full contemporary exhibition. Think Chardin's still live's, English tweed, Fox Hounds, Ducks, Mallards, Fox Chase, Deer, Pheasants, Antlers, Fishing, Wolves, Horse and Riders, as well as figurative works of Diana goddess of the hunt. Its always of interest to our collectors to have a new exciting theme for their collection, and as artists of this century we want to be inspired by and also carry on traditions from our past masters, however making it our own for the market of today”. After its debut at the Salmagundi Club on the East coast September 19th to the 23rd, the works will travel to California at Vanessa Rothe Fine Art Gallery from September 30th thru October 30th, 2019.

The current Realism Without Borders Spring Collection 2019 will exhibit over 50 works by 25 top International artists from Iceland to France, Norway to America, Russia to the Ukraine and featuring many new works by our French artist member Nicolas Martin.
This exciting fine art exhibition blurs physical country borders and boundaries as well as allows for creative freedom without boundaries within the works. Often combining Realism, Impressionism and abstraction, the works form a bold exhibition concept that is the talk of the art world. Works range from classical realism to a new contemporary realism that may for example combine a finely rendered figure with blurred edges or abstract backgrounds. From bold brushwork to finely fit details, from the Russian schools of realism in St. Petersberg to the Ukranian works with vibrant loose Impressionist brushwork. This Spring VRFA is proud to offer a significant historical large 35” x30” William Wendt Early California Impressionist painting form a private collection.
Exhibiting side by side, Soviet and historical works with contemporary works by Russian, Ukrainian, American, French, Norwegian, Icelandic, Chinese and German, Realism Without Borders aims to connect two centuries and two continents via the commitment to realist painting traditions. “Artists from all over the globe can now share their images of work thru social media and are influencing one another across borders. This exhibition celebrates those blurring of boundaries of borders, in both the literal sense and the works.” Explains Rothe “The viewers will see similar works and styles being created from opposite ends of the globe, finding unity and likeness in the art that is being created.” notes Rothe
“The collection ranges from classical academic works to painterly Impressionist pieces where many works boasts a combination of the two in the same canvas. The International group of classically trained representational artists believes in the successful combination of objective traditional realism combined with expressive and personal subjects, and the work often boasts a board range of tight to painterly styles and strokes.” Explains Rothe
Participating contemporary artists include: Tom Balderas, Mia Bergeron, Eric Bowman, Michelle Dunaway, Megan Euell, Mark Fehlman,
David Gray, Olga Grigoreyva, Thor Grimour Einarsson, Debra Joy Groesser, Cornelia Hernes, Debra Huse, Alexander Kremer, Olga Krimon, Sergey Kovalanko, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Nicolas Martin, Derek Penix, Jesse Powell, Loeoniya Okun, Craig Pursley, Rodolfo Rivadelamar, Ray Roberts, Vanessa Rothe, Mary Sauer, Valery Schmatko, Vadim Suvorov, Joseph Todorovitch, Jim Wodark, and Daniil Volkov. Many of the artists in fact traveled to Paris May 2017 thru the Paris Seminar. There we painted together, learned about group figure composition, studied the masters in person at the top Museums, traced the footsteps of great American artists who painted in Paris and gleaned how literature can play a role in inspire great paintings. This rare voyage aimed to re created some of the late 1800s where artists such as the Impressionists often painted together and created exhibitions together, influencing one another.
The two Bi Continental exhibitions, one in Los Angeles California, and one in Paris France, will present their finished works as a group and may include on location studies along side to show the inspirational process. These exciting new works will include: self portraits, still life's, landscapes, figures, and city scapes. Weather they were inspired by historical American Artists who spent time painting in Paris such as CHASE, SARGENT, or by a French novel they read (Flaubert, Rousseau, Baudelaire perhaps?) a museum they visited and its walls or history, French decadent Interiors, Parisian fashion, or by one particular painting they saw in person there its color harmony, application of paint, or genre.

"coloring out of the lines" here at VRFA Gallery to bringing our clients FRESH new works and exciting themes to add to their collections.
We are "off to the races" with this new exhibition coinciding with the open season at the Del Mar and Santa Anita horse racetracks here in California. Taking inspiration from the Impressionist DEGAS the exhibit and works will focus on movement and brushwork. They are a strong combination of exquisitely rendered realism with a loose impressionist brushwork, the combination VRFA Gallery has become known for. The works are simply divine that are coming in, as if you stepped into a fine art Museum in Europe. This luxury event brings a long time treasured sport of horse racing to light and celebrates also horse and hound and Western horse and rider. Featuring special guest equestrian artist Sam Robinson and his newest collection created for the gallery, along with VRFA artists listed above. Also featuring NEW sculpture artist Mark Edward Adams and his fine works of horses in bronze, clay and terracotta and great new sculptures by Mardie Rees. Beautiful additions to your mantle, garden or entrance table.
