"Impressionism comes to America" by Vanessa Rothe
This lecture covers how French Impressionism started in Paris, and the little known and fascinating history of how it actually came to America with the help of the American artist Mary Cassatt, her family, along with her own patrons of the arts. A pivotal moment in American art. The lecture also includes stunning slide shows what was being created here in the Hudson River valley prior to its arrival, and the Impressionist schools that branched out from its arrival, one leading to California. Will include a few works from the Hilbert collection at the end, leading us here to where we are today. Based on 2022 article written by Rothe for American Fine Art historical magazine.
NEW! Rothe will be presenting a series of Lectures this Summer Fall 2023 at the HILBERT MUSEUM in Orange CA.

Lecture "LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS" Lecture also became an 6 page article in International Artist Magazine 2020
Rothe presented the idea that learning from the Masters is an important step in an artists career, both early on in their studies and later as a master themselves to learn new techniques in painting. Master copies play an important role in artists lives and are seldom seen from the artists studio. They help to show the skill of the artist and are an important insight to what inspired the artist in their own work. With this exhibition we bring a collection of works to celebrate the importance of master copies in our artist's lives. Just as a businessman does an internship and lawyers study past cases, an artist learns by copying the masters. In art school figure painting 101 we work many many hours learning techniques such as grisaille, layering, edge work, and the final assignment is to copy a Master work of an older artist. They are done most often after a master who has passed, but sometimes even living masters are copied. The works are new painted works, and the artists are trying to emulate the master they admire and are copying. This is an important tool for all artists and helps us learn and take our work to the next level. Both early in their career, or later as mid career or masters themselves, completing a master copy from an artist you admire, helps one to learn new skills or new additions to our set of painters tools. Perhaps they did the copy to learn how the master achieved the lighting. Perhaps they are done to learn how to warm up the skin tones in their own work. Perhaps the artist admired the figures or general paint application style. After a master copy is completed and the work studied up close, strokes copied, techniques learned that new artist may add one or two of the elements that they learned into their own work, first hand.
Lecture "FINE ART AND FASHION" at the SALMAGUNDI CLUB NEW YORK CITY, 2018
Rothe lectured at the Salmagundi Club at 47 on 5th Avenue New York NY, Concurrent with the Art Renewal Center ( ARC SALON) Annual exhibition at the Club. Rothe's lecture included Fashion as a longtime influence on artists and their paintings, as have historical master works in turn influenced many fashion designers throughout the ages. From the gold embroidered folds on the dresses found in Waterhouse’s paintings, to the top hats the Dandy's wear in the Impressionist works by Caillebotte, couture in paintings not only shows us what the styles were in at the time, but reminds us that clothing itself can often be a "work of art" and a form of expression. Combining top contemporary realist paintings from around the globe with one of a kind creations by current fashion designers and a bespoke shoe maker, this exciting new exhibition and lectures aimed to celebrate the long time inspiring relationship of fine art and fashion.” Explains the curator Vanessa Françoise Rothe.
